These instant pot mashed potatoes are awesome because they are simple to make, and very versatile. You can add just about anything you want to them to tweak them for the specific meal you are making along with them.
Here’s what we use for a starting point for this recipe.
2 pounds red potatoes, washed and cubed
3 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped
1 cup your favorite broth or stock or water
Sea salt and black pepper, to taste
4 ounces cream cheese, cut into chunks
Simply add your potato chunks, garlic, and stock to your InstantPot and set on high for 8 minutes. Then use a potato masher, immersion blender, or hand blender right in your InstantPot! Could this be any easier? You get the prefect consistency every time and this is super easy.

You can add fresh herbs like parsley to your instant pot mashed potatoes for a great really fresh taste.
You can also add other types of cheeses to go along with your main course better
We like to sometimes add lemon juice to our mashed potatoes too for a light and unique flavor.
If you don’t have cream cheese on hand, you can also substitute milk or sour cream for the perfect texture.

To make these InstantPot mashed potatoes vegan and dairy free, simply use vegan dairy free cream cheese, or just add about half a cup more liquid.
How long do you steam potatoes in the instant pot for mashed potatoes
We steam our potatoes for 8 minutes in the InstantPot then let the pressure release naturally for another 8 minutes. If you forget about them, no big deal, they will be ready and waiting for you whenever you get to them!
Because we cut up our potatoes, steaming them is pretty quick!
How do you make mashed potatoes in instant pot without a steamer basket?
Just throw your potatoes on in! You really don’t need a steamer basket, especially sine we mash everything right up in the InstantPot
How much water do you need to steam potatoes in an instant pot?
We use a cup of liquid, and that make sure things are nice and creamy. Technically, you only need the minimum liquid for your pot to come to pressure, which is a cup for the 6 quart InstantPot and 2 cups for the 8 quart.
Can you steam a potato in an instant pot?
If you want to steam a whole potato in the Instant Pot, you can do it! All you need to do is just poke a few holes in the potato so that they will steam instead of boiling.
Cook a whole potato in the Instant pot for about 20 minutes and you’ll have a delicious, easy to peel potato that is also tender on the inside.
How long does it take to reheat mashed potatoes in the instant pot?
To reheat mashed potatoes in the instant pot you can use the sauce function.
Preheat your instant pot on saute, then add in all of those mashed potatoes from last night’s dinner. Stir them up for a few seconds before turning off the lid to let them steam heat for five to 10 minutes,
Can I keep mashed potatoes warm in the instant pot?
Yes, just leave the instant pot on the keep warm function for up to two hours. Since we make ours right in the instant pot it is super simple!
Simple and Easy Mashed Red Potatoes in the Instant Pot
- Instant Pot
- 2 lbs. red potatoes washed and cubed
- 3-4 cloves garlic peeled and chopped
- 1 c. chicken or vegetable broth
- Sea salt and black pepper to taste
- 4 oz. cream cheese cut into chunks
- Place potatoes, garlic, and broth in Instant Pot®. Season with salt and black pepper, to taste.
- Add the lid and flip pressure valve to “Sealing” position. Select the “Manual” option and adjust setting to “high.” Set cook time to 8 minutes. When finished, allow pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes, then do a quick release for any remaining pressure.
- Carefully open lid and add cream cheese. Mash potato mixture with a potato masher or an immersion blender until blended, but not completely smooth. Season with additional salt and black pepper, to taste, and serve immediately. Enjoy!
